Story of Mary Magdalene

Story of Mary Magdalene A continued interest and associations with Mary Magdalene provided for further examination. The relevance of her time as a example of inspiration to all who still find their paths of sincerity and goodwill marked by scandal and controversy. The following personal journal entry may serve to clarify this interest. One of the most interesting and inspirational women of the bible, is Mary Magdalene. Her apparent dedication to Jesus despite ridicule, jealously and un-acceptance amongst his friends can be related to by many women throughout history. The importance of whether she was a prostitute, Jesus wife or both becomes less relevant than the conflicts she faced in her times and her steadfast dedication to Him, regardless of definition of relationship between and degree of intimacy expressed. Many women throughout history and today find themselves judged in societal situations in which they have to determine their dedication and faith within their relationship and would find Mary Magdalenes decisions and actions inspirational and reassuring to see that they are not alone in their situation. Mary Magdalenes influence and role in the bible seem to be one of the best influences in humanize Jesus. Showing us some the personal and emotional challenges that Jesus faced as a person and therefore having his life experience expressed in a way everyone, at some point in their lives can relate to. While the recount says that all of the disciples fled, out of fear, when Jesus was crucified, it is only Mary Magdalene that is recounted in all 4 versions of the Gospel to be near or by Jesus side during this horrific experience. Guess you know who your friends are when the chips are down. This brief recap of a previous journal entry was used to outline what is recognized as the most personally relevant stories of the bible and the observations regarding them. The following stories of Mary Magdalene from the bible are as powerful and relevant to the lives of many and in addition work to help me appreciate, understand and complete my initial observations. She was expelled of seven different demons. The number seven may have been used to emphasize the severity of the illness. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there. *she gave whatever she could to further Gods cause- This is a demonstration of Jesus acceptance of the independent woman. This was revolutionary in and of itself given the perceptions of woman of the times. Mary at the crucifixion (Mark 15:40-41, Luke 23:49, Matthew 27:55-56, John 19:25) In each of the four gospels of the crucifixion Mary was present, either standing at a distance with other women, or standing near the cross. Mary prepared Jesus body for burial (Luke 23:55-56, Matthew 27:61) Mary watched as Jesus body was sealed inside the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. She could confirm that he was really dead. She and the other women prepared the spices needed for proper burial of a body. Jewish tombs: Jews followed the custom of burial in natural and artificial caves. Generally only the rich used tombs, with the poor using pits, cisterns, caves, and earthen graves outside their cities. Tombs were located in gardens attached to homes, within city walls, on elevated sites, on hillsides, and in caves (natural and hand hewn). this information is from The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible, vol. 5, pg.772. Prophets and kings were buried within the city limits; everyone else was buried outside the city limits. Wealthy tombs were often cut into rock, some containing several chambers. The entrance was closed by rolling around rolling-stone down an inclined plane in front of the mouth of the sepulcher. this information is from Manners and Customs of Bible Lands, by Fred H. Wright, Moody Press, co. 1953, pgs. 144,145. 4 Mary witnesses the resurrection (Mark 16:1-11, Luke 24:1-11, Matthew 28:1-10, John 20:1-18). Mary found that Jesus body was no longer in the tomb. She received a message from an angel and was the first person to see the risen Jesus. She was thus the first witness of the resurrection. The ethical cultural and political environment surrounding the people of this time played a strong influence on the interpretation of Mary Magdalenes life. Even with the stark contrast of todays environment of Middle America the relevance of interpretation of the power and influence of this women offers as an example for todays woman. The people of Jesus time lived in a state occupied by Roman rule, law and allegiance to Cesar, King of the Roman Empire. The Jewish state in this region was allowed certain amount of religious tolerance provided that legal and economic sanctions were upheld by the Jews with regard to Roman rule. One of the greatest philosophers, Plato, proposed the theory of dualism, suggesting that everything in the cosmos had an equal and opposite other. This theory had a profound impact on the way that women were viewed, and it was not to womens advantage. Woman was placed in a category containing elements that were viewed as negative: Civilization was the ideal; Nature was mistrusted and potentially dangerous. Logic and reason were admired, and emotion was to be subordinated. Goodness was always preferable to evil. Light, especially in the pre-industrial world, was preferred to darkness These are examples only, but they show that Platonic dualism placed women in a negative category. They were seen as closer to the natural/animal world than men. By nature they were irrational and untrustworthy, and therefore unfit to make their own decisions and govern their own lives. They had to be looked after and controlled, never treated as equals. This differed from the traditional Jewish way of looking at the world, which saw all things in creation as integrated and complementary, rather than as opposites of each other. An example of this is the creation story of Eve, which relates that the first woman was created from a rib taken by God from Adams side, thereby suggesting that a man could never be fully complete unless he was in partnership with a woman. Jewish and Jewish/Christian women resisted the ideas of Platonic dualism, which patronized them and diminished their status. While Christianity remained a Jewish sect, the status ofwomen within the Christian communities was high. But as the ideas of Christianity moved out into the Gentile, Hellenised world, the first Christians found they had to use the Greek philosophical framework to explain their beliefs and be accepted.So Jesus original ideal of mutual respect between the sexes was watered down and changed. Women found they were given roles that were acceptable in the outside, Hellenistic culture. In doing so, the Christian church stepped back from the radical ideals of the first Jewish/Christians. God created us in his image we mirror a family resemblance of Him. 2 Cor.3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lords glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. This doesnt mean our physical nature but our spiritual and moral nature. We are able to communicate. We are creative, and that gives us joy and satisfaction. We experience emotions and feelings. We know the difference between right and wrong. We are responsible for our actions. Even though the original relationship between God and man was cut by the fall, God has pursued his children through the ages, sending his son Jesus so that we might be reconciled to God and become his sons and daughters. His image is reflected in us. Because of Jesus the image is brought back into focus so that his glory shines from the reflection. Jesus is in each one of us, you and me, and His glory shines out. This examination of Mary Magdalenes life and times has offered clarity in relating to those hardships and challenges and has served as an inspiration to women of all times. Difference between Nominal GDP and Real GDP

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country is the value in the market of all goods and services produced in a certain area or a certain country within a certain period of time (Investopedia. com). It is usually used to measure the size of the country’s economy. However, there are other aspects that should be considered in the measurement of the country’s GDP. This is where the Nominal and Real GDP comes in. The Nominal GDP is gross domestic product in that year’s prices (Investorwords.com).For example, the GDP of 2006 is dependent on the value of the dollar in 2006. It is not affected by other factors like inflation rates and others that would tend to decrease the actual GDP. Nominal GDP on the other hand, may increase due to the increased output of an economy, or when the prices in that economy have also increased. However, Nominal GDP may not be that useful as a gauge of the country’s production, since it is not affected by the actuality of the curren t inflation rates.Because of this, the Real GDP is a much preferred measure. The Real Gross Domestic Product on the other hand, is defined as the number that results from computing all the productive activity within the country depending on that certain year’s prices (FX Words). But when what is being valued is the economic activity of more than one period of time, and then the purchasing power will be computed and compared.Because of this, the effects of the inflation at that year should be removed by maintaining constant prices. This usually lowers the computed GDP value instead of increasing it like the effect in Nominal GDP. It is the nominal GDP stated in the base-year level of price, wherein it is the nominal GDP of a certain year adjusted for inflation. The Real GDP is being expressed as a percentage.

Answers: 1. Below are six dishes and seasonings commonly eaten by Southeast Asians or Pacific Islanders: Adobo is the most popular dish in the Philippines. It is meat which is usually cooked with vinegar, garlic, pepper and sometimes soy sauce and coconut milk can also be added. The meat may be pork or chicken. Adobo is usually eaten with steamed rice and eaten as a meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Lumpia is another food from the Philippines. It is usually eaten for merienda or a meal in between lunch and dinner. Merienda is comparable to English high tea. Lumpia is similar to a spring roll. It is usually made of vegetables such as cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots and ground meat wrapped in a thin piece of pastry. Its roots come from the Chinese who brought it to the Philippines. Pancit is another foo from the Philippines which is usually eaten for merienda. The food is also introduced by the Chinese migrants to the Philippines. It is fried noodles with assorted vegetables, shrimp, pork, chicken or ham. It is usually accompanied with calamansi, a citrus fruit similar to lime, which is squeezed onto the noodles. Halo-halo, which literally means to mix, is a favorite dessert among Filipinos especially during the summer. It is made of assorted beans, fruits such as banana, coconut flesh, jackfruit and tapioca balls which are layered on top of shaved ice. The dessert can also be topped with custard or ice cream. It is eaten by mixing all the ingredients which is served in a tall glass. Milk and sugar is also added according to taste. Nuoc Mam or fish sauce is usually used as seasoning to every dish in Vietnam. It is extracted from fermented fish and used in cooking or as a dipping sauce during meals. The Vietnam fish sauce is said to be more pungent than other Southeast Asian fish sauces. It is usually done by adding a bit of shrimp paste into the sauce. The Nuoc Mam Sauce is made from Nuoc Mam with fresh chilies, garlic, sugar, lime and vinegar. This is used as a dipping sauce for meals. Nam Prik is another condiment used in almost all Thai dishes. It is a spicy paste prepared in a variety of ways. Calzone originated from Naples in Italy, which is considered the culinary capital Southern France. It is pizza dough folded over a filling of cheese, ham or salami and is baked or fried. The southern part of France is agriculturally poorer than the northern part. Risotto is a creamy rice dish cooked in butted and chicken stock and usually flavoured with parmesan cheese and saffron. This dish originally came from Milan. Last is the panettone which is a special dessert traditionally served during Christmas. It is a type of fruitcake. The climate in Germany is generally cold and damp. Certain crops that grow in such weather conditions include potatoes, cabbage and beats. Knodel is a type of dumpling from Germany usually stuffed with potatoes and cooked with or without yeast. Sausages or wurst are the most common German food. There are four basic types of sausages: Rohwurst which is similar to liverwurst and is ready to eat; Bruwurst of the frankfurter which is scalded which can be eaten as is or by simmering it first; Knockwurst which is like cold cuts and Bratwurst which is raw and must be fried or grilled before eating. The cold climate in Germany encourages people to drink alcohol to keep them warm. Beer usually accompanies sausages. Such as in sausages, there are four types of beer: Pilsner which is light in color and has bitter taste; Lager which is aged about 6 weeks and is the most common type of beer in Germany; Bock which has the strongest flavour; and Marzenbier which is midway between Pilsner and Bock and is usually served during Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival observed from September to October and is celebrated by sausage-eating and beer-drinking and polka bands. 3. A. Similarities in cuisine between China, Japan and Korea are mainly because Japan has very strong Chinese influences while Korea has been controlled by China and Japan throughout much of its history. As early as 0-300 AD, record showed the extensive contact between Japan and China. The Japanese consider China as an ancient civilization from which its own culture stems from. Japan is often considered the daughter of Chinese civilization. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Japanese scholars were sent to China to help establish their own identity. The Japanese brought a number of teachings and culture from China which they adopted to Japan. These include: Buddhist teachings, Chinese customs and cultures, bureaucracy, architecture and city planning. These factors have influenced Japanese cuisine. Marine trading between China and Japan was also prevalent during 600-1600AD. Many similar ingredients found in both countries can be owed to this phenomenon. Korea, being under Japan and China through mush of its history, adopted many of these countries customs and culture. Its proximity to the two countries also suggests extensive trading and contact and therefore being influence by culture, tastes and manner of cooking. Their proximity also suggests similar weather patterns and therefore similar vegetation and animal breeds which are used in cooking and meal preparation. Another factor is the isolationist foreign policies of Korea and Japan. Because of this, they were not open to Western culture and have stuck to their Chinese roots. Their differences are due to environmental situation and climate. Although eating raw fish was said to have originated in China, pollution of their rivers made this an impractical custom. Only the Japanese traditionally eat raw fish since they have preserved the cleanliness of their rivers. The travel time of trading goods has also initiated differences in preserving foods. In Korea, food that came from mainland China are preserved in salt and chili to preserve them throughout the changing seasons. B. All three countries prevalently use soybean products in their meals. Tofu which is a soybean by-product is used in soups and viands while soy sauce is often used as a condiment for pre seasoning and as a dipping sauce. Soybean products are also used instead of dairy products. Another similarity is how these countries consider food. Food is considered to be more than just a meal, it is used because of its health benefits and for spiritual purposes. Thus they all used a lot of medicinal herbs in their menu such as ginseng. They also classify food according to spiritual balance such as the yin and yang. As food for the soul, the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans put emphasis in how the food is prepared and served according to their beliefs and customs. C. Japanese cuisine is different from Chinese and Korean in the sense that most of their food is cooked in or over water while other Asian food use oil such as peanut and corn oil, as a medium for cooking. In this way, Japanese have the least events of heart disease and high cholesterol levels. Japanese cuisine is also notably simple as compared to Chinese and Korean fares. As opposed to Chinese and Korean dishes, Japanese use seasonings sparingly, letting the subtle flavors of the ingredients take centerstage. Unlike the Koreans and Chinese who are fond of preserved foods, the Japanese put importance on the freshness of the food and prize the first picks of a season’s harvest. D. As mentioned above, the Japanese uses few spices and value the natural flavors and freshness of foods. Most chefs describe Japanese cuisine as simple and pure. E. Korean food is very spicy and put emphasis in the colors of the food for aesthetic presentation. Kimchi, an example of a spicy food, is vegetable preserved in chili peppers. The colors that constitute Korean dishes are white, red, black, green and yellow. 4. It is interesting to note how culture, climate, religious beliefs, geography, political arrangements and migration patters affect the types of food served in a region or country. In Europe for example, alcohol is normally served with meals because of the climate. It is generally cold in Europe. This also explains the type of crops that grow in such conditions. They usually have potatoes and cabbage. This food pattern was also adopted to Northern America because of migration patterns. In agriculturally abundant regions of Europe, they use tomato and other vegetable produce such as eggplants for their food. They also use dairy products as opposed to countries such as Korea, Japan and China where they use soy products instead of milk. They also use herbs such as basil to flavour their foods. In terms of religion and tradition, countries in Europe eat certain foods during festivals such as Christmas and feast days of saints and during lent. Politics also play a role in influences on food. For example, in Europe, they are able to discover new ingredients from their conquests of other lands. Chutney, which is a condiment of spiced fruits in the British Isles is originally from India. Geography also plays a critical role. Countries near bodies of water tend to eat mostly seafood while those in the inland have meats in their diet. Those who migrate or travel a lot usually discover the method of pickling and come up with different kinds of relish and cured meat.
